LONG AGO, THE PEOPLE WERE DYING AT THE END OF THE WORLD.
Every summer the People stare and watch that which blights their lands and their souls. What sickens the soul of every Knight is not that they cannot help it. No, it's that they love the dawn despite it all, or perhaps because of it.
But the Sun Age is not as bad as it could have been. Of course, the People of Southreach Remnant didn't care about the crusade, as expected. No, their gift was indifference; they allowed the Knights to fight in peace.
Ever-brave and ever-valiant are the Lay Brotherhood of Dev Ishana, or "the Blind Brothers", who in emulation of their patron, put out their eyes that they might not ever see the Dawn, nor the spite of the People, nor the faces of the Demons. Strong are they, faithful are they, wise and mystical, they listen to things that no normal Person may hear. Their Starlight Axes whistle as the blades cut the air, and there is no sight nor sound as beautiful and terrible as a full brigade of Blind Brothers singing hymns in tune, their whistling blades cleaving harmony, demons screaming rhythm and blood gushing accompaniment.
But they are not the only Knights Stellar in Southreach; many a ranger, errant, or band from the other Remnants come to Southreach, to study from the Brotherhood, to find tomes on sail-making and ship-building, to trade and rest. Heaven's Five Lights sought a way to revive one of the great beast-stars. The roguish Corsaires Célestes claimed they were on the cusp of being able to invoke the spirits of any dead Knight within themselves. These were the heroes who took residence in Southreach against the Mistake.
Scuttlebutt and rumor was that the other cities were declining, slowly but surely, plagued from within and without. Some claimed that it was a stranger who brought the Demons of Heart and Mind. Others related tales of criminals revealed to be Mistaken spies and sappers. Still some said that the Doom would come from one whose purity and honor had been struck down.
(OOC: The Mistaken of this story are a closely-knitted family of demon marauders who ride on living motorcycles. The "family" part is to play upon Castor's "Exile" Theme.)

BUT HOPE WAS NOT LOST, FOR CASTOR STILL HEARD THE VOICE OF THE STARS.
Despite the people's suffering compounding her own heavy heart, she walked with conviction through the wastelands near her hometown alongside her fellow knights.
One day Ara, one day... she thought, looking up at the white hot sky We'll fight on the same side...
She stopped, angry at herself for losing focus again. From the exact moment she lost her beloved, her mind was always with her. Her fellow knights merely exchanged annoyed looks. The anger within her seemed to boil over and before she knew it she was speaking.
"I'm pretty sure you've all heard about the crimes I've committed so if you're going to look down on me it would be much better for all of us if you did it in private."

Once, the People had prospered. Trade flourished across the lands, sails took on the four winds. Although once at war the once-four kingdoms of the world grew linked together through marriage and alliance. And just as everything at the height of their power, there was no way but down.
A little-known book contained the secret of "magic". What most did not know that its use would weaken the fabric of reality that would cause a demonic portal to appear. And yet it was convenient. Why deal in limited supplies of gold? Why even bother using a furnace when a flame spell would suffice?
And so, They appeared...

AND SO IT WAS that a great doorway rose from the earth in front of Southreach's gates, just as tall and twice as large. Made of blackened stone and copper, the door was carved with all manner of strange rune, fell beast, and terrible weapon. For the span of ten heartbeats the door stood silent, before slowly creaking open just a crack. From the great whiteness within the doorway bolted forth three female figures riding on strange mounts, faster than any six-legged steed.
The first was tall, taller than any Person, lovely without compare, with skin the color of fire-ash. Rising from the top of her head amidst shoulder-length black hair were two sharp backward-curving horns, smoldering as if they were logs pulled from the fire. The first's amber eyes were large, her ears were small webbed wings, and her figure shapely but wiry. She was dressed in a red sleeveless coat, slung at her side was a saber, sheathed in brass, and around her neck was a golden choker-collar, intricately carved. In her hand was a tall spear, a bundle of cloth wrapped under its obsidian head.
The second was somewhat shorter than the first, just as lovely, sharing skin color and ears. Her black hair formed a long tail that hung down her back, her horns two hooks. Her eyes were azure, and she wore a sleeveless, low-cut black hide shirt and hose, clinging to every slender curve. She bore a saber as well, and a moon-bladed halberd.
The third sister was the second's exact twin in body and dress, save her eyes were leaf-green and her polearm was a grandly-barbed harpoon.
The engines upon which they rode resembled two black iron lizards whose jaws bit each other, their legs clamped down on burning wheels of smokeless flame.
The first raised her banner, and thrust it into the earth, where the bundle unfurled into a banner, with a strange house as its device. The three sisters dismounted, drew their swords, raised them high, and crossed blades in salutation.
"We, the Qarluc Clan," they shouted in unison. "do claim these lands in the name of our family, our selves, and our needs. This we swear, that until every star ceases to shine in the sky, that enemies of the tribe shall meet death, that friends shalt be welcome among us. Come forth, Those-Who-Need!"
Then the doors swung open and a great mass of demon refugees dressed in all manner of rags stormed out, surging upon the gates.

The demons appeared as if they were spewing from a rift in the space infront of their eyes. Castor could hear a few of her fellow knights gasp in terror, but most of them merely let out a sigh as they unsheathed their various weapons. Instinctively she brandished her own weapon and rushed towards the enemies.
She could hear the unholy screams of the demons intermingle with the valiant cris of her fellow knights. And though her spine would tremble every time she heard the unmistakeable shout of a fellow soldier who'd fallen, she never let her mind or sword be swayed away from the enemy all around her.
Time passed and soon she could hear the sounds of battle wane; she could actually hear the last demon's flesh cut open by her sword and then nothing but the heavy breathing of her allies and the retreat of the remaining demon forces.
"We have a few casualties, but I'd say we handled that pretty well." Castor could barely hear her fellow officer, her eyes fixed on the three women standing in front of a doorway that seemed like a rift in space against the pale snow. She held her sword high and yelled;
"Save the reports for later. It's not over just yet!"

BUT ONLY IF across the battlefield, Zazelle notices Castor, and, pointing her gleaming gold saber, beckons her to duel.

Going against her initial instinct to run from the ethereal woman, Castor brandished her sword and ran towards her. The rest of the knights followed in formation.
"While this is all of us against three, I think we should excise some caution! Cover me!"
"Identify yourself!" She shouted to the mysterious woman "State your origin and business in this land!"

"My business is my family. My family is now here to stay. My name - however - is Zazelle. Zazelle Qarluc. And what is yours, pretty Knight? With whom of what family do I have the honor of crossing blades?"

"My name and roots are of no concern to you!" Castor began. She stopped in front of Zazelle, keeping her sword held up. The rest of her force went ahead to engage the other two women "But I am a knight of Southreach and it is my duty to let you know that you are not allowed to loiter around our borders if you have even the slightest hint of any foul intentions towards our people."
"Well, do you?"

"My family needs to eat, Pretty Knight. They need a place to live and call their own, a place to raise our children in safety. There is no such place back there in Nishkriya." said Zazelle, pointing in the direction of the Mistake. "The right question is, will you slaughter us all, Pretty Bloodstained Knight? Those who merely wish to live?"

"You're surprisingly confident in your assertions considering you seem to be leading an invading force." She slowly circled around Zazelle, moving slowly towards her.
"I've had enough of your flowery intentions, my duty is to protect the people of this land."
She lashed out with her blade, aiming for the other woman's neck.

With a flash of movement, Zazelle parried the blow. "That was an poor assault. You fight half-heartedly, Pretty Knight. Could it be? Yes. You doubt the "people" of this land. Are they worth fighting for?"
Blade flashing, Zazelle whipped her saber forth an overhead chop.

Castor ducked and quickly struck at her opponents hand out with her blade.
"It is no longer my place to doubt my duty!"

"Don't you know? Lying kills."
AND SO IT WAS that Zazelle, with a quick stroke of her flashing blade, beheaded Castor, slaying the best and truest of knights Southreach ever had.

YOU ASK FAR TOO MUCH.
Castor dodged Zazelle's blade and rushed away. She had no choice but to retreat.
No. No. No.
"Don't you hear me? Run, we're falling back! Come on!" She followed the sound of her fellow knights, running as fast as she could with her blade still in her hands.

(Oh, crap. I just realized that I can't ask for your death. Not now, since you're still a Novice. So I change my statement to the following.)
(Also, when you use 'You Ask Far Too Much' you need to expend a theme.)
"Don't you know? Lying kills. And we'd know. These cannonballs are made from lie-tellers and speak-falses."
AND SO IT WAS that the the great doorway opened, and a large battery of red-metaled artillery pieces. At Zazelle's command, they discharged, pounding Southreach with rounds of white bone into so much dust and blood.

"No! Stop!" Castor angrily slashed the air in front of her, hoping to wound Zazelle as much as she'd wounded Southreach. She could hear her fellow knights shout for her to retreat, but her anger kept her eyes focused on the enemy in front of her.

"See you, Pretty Knight. When next we meet, you will tell me your name." said Zazelle, her sword-arm raised in salute. A grin, a twinkling of the eye, and a great leap later, the three sisters raced off into the great doorway, which slammed shut with a resounding, final BOOM.

Castor wanted to stay and figure out some way to destroy the door but she could hear her fellow knights call, so she raced back to Southreach.

It was nightfall when the party got back to Southreach. Already, rumors had begun to spread; was it the beginning of the end? Some more antagonistic elements blamed Castor and the knights, thinking it a plot for them to keep magic for themselves. Others brushed off the rumors of three she-demons astride fearsome iron beasts. Nevertheless, the city was in a furor.
An old woman, slender and ethereal, approached Castor at the city gates. "Young lady, could you come with me for a while?" The tone in her voice noted that she knew the situation was more sinister than the people thought.

While she was wary of the old woman Castor's mind raced with questions "Of course, but be warned; I will always do my best to slay my enemy, regardless of age."

"I am not your foe; in fact, I will tell you what you need to know about them." Grasping Castor's arm, she teleported the two of them to the top of a secluded tower.
"AS you may have surmised, these demons are from another dimension. They sense magical energy, and when there is enough of it - especially when used for eldritch purposes - they decide to take magic for themselves. Nevertheless, they're not immortal - yet they require a lot of power and mastery of words to overcome."

"Please tell me how! I'm sure that if you've called me here you're also displeased with their ways?"

"Yes, yes... though as it is I am more displeased with how the world is, given that it is why we're in this mess." A weary sigh left the old woman's lips, and she turned to a bookshelf. Retrieving a blue-covered book, she turned to Castor and asked, "Should you be willing to undertake this, do remember that even the most honorable warrior is but a few steps from perdition."
"This book contains an ancient ritual that will allow any human to close a demonic portal. However, to do so, one must acquire a tremendous amount of magical energy - and, as I will tell you many a time, magical energy is one of the most insidious forces in the universe. You must vanquish many a foe to do so. However, there is a quicker way to gather energy, and you must only use it if and only if desperation crosses your mind and you are willing to lose your humanity."
|
|
|
Post by fourteenwings on Sept 3, 2013 13:34:16 GMT
Castor reached out to receive the book from the old woman.
"I'll gladly follow your instruction, ma'am. But could I ask a few questions first?"
"How do I make sure all of the... more dangerous demons have left before I seal the portal? And what exactly do you mean by losing one's humanity?"
|
|
|
Post by teenagewastelander on Sept 9, 2013 1:57:13 GMT
"You defeat them in single combat. Their code demands that they fight with honor. Together, the demons are unstoppable; by themselves, they are vulnerable. They will retreat once they are defeated, yet I would suggest you get help before sealing the portal."
The old witch sighed as she readied herself. "If you must... magical energy is gained from a being's energy. It is linked to their nervous systems, so creatures with primitive nerves, like a jellyfish, are almost non-existent magically. It is enhanced by the creature's emotional bonds, which are more prominent in sapient beings like humans. Positive emotions are the strongest enhancers of magical energy.
My point is... should you wish, you will have to betray and kill your friends and loved ones to quickly gain the energy. But doing so will leave you more vulnerable to corruption. Ultimately, it is up to you to decide. Does your humanity matter as much as saving this doomed world?"
|
|
|

"Corruption?..." Castor shook her head of her questions "Nevermind that; send me back, I must start as soon as possible."

"All right, then. Guard the tome with your life, if need be." Muttering an ancient teleportation chant, the crone sent Castor back to Southreach.
